Vanderbilt forward Jaylen Carey entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Joe Tipton confirmed. He played just one season at Vandy after coming over from James Madison.

Carey averaged eight points per game this season and 5.7 rebounds per game. During conference play, his averages bumped up to 10 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game.

As a member of the Class of 2023, Carey was not ranked, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He played his high school basketball at Westminster Academy (Fla.).

Carey wasn’t the only forward to enter the transfer portal. Vanderbilt big man JaQualon Roberts also entered the portal.

Roberts played high school basketball at Bloomington (IN) Bloomington North, where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 230 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Recruited under the old regime, Roberts saw his role deteriorate under Mark Byington. A total of 21 games played saw no starts and a nightly appearance of under five minutes per game. Roberts averaged 1.0 points and grabbed 0.8 rebounds.

Moving on from Vanderbilt for Roberts comes not too long after an NCAA Tournament exit. A postseason appearance was something the Commodores have been missing in recent years. Getting into the field was a big accomplishment and despite minimal, Roberts still played a role.
