Vanderbilt hoops just announced the hiring of a new assistant to head coach Jerry Stackhouse’s staff. The Commodores have hired Anthony Wilkins, an experienced assistant coach who worked under Josh Pastner at Georgia Tech the las five years and was even the associate head coach for the Yellow Jackets in 2022-23. However, Pastner was let go in March and Wilkins took over as the interim until a new guy, who wound up being Damon Stoudamire, was brought in.

After the coaching change, Wilkins is now leaving his hometown Atlanta for another major southern city in Nashville to be apart of the Vandy staff under Coach Stack.

Here’s what the ‘Dores head coach had to say about the hiring of his newest staff member:

““We are thrilled to add Anthony Wilkins to our Vanderbilt coaching staff. He is an experienced teacher, recruiter and mentor who has proven experience at the highest levels of college basketball. My relationship with Anthony dates back to my playing days and I’ve enjoyed watching his growth into an outstanding coach. We are excited to welcome Anthony to our program and believe in his ability to impact in all facets of our program.”

Wilkins also gave a small statement of his own upon the announcement of his hiring:

“Vanderbilt is a proud and accomplished community, whose values and integrity are the gold standard in academics and athletics. I’m thankful for the opportunity to support Coach Stackhouse. His leadership and demand of excellence sets an inspiring tone. I’m excited to contribute. Anchor Down.”

Lastly, here was a brief summary of Wilkins’ coaching career to date:

“Prior to arriving at Georgia Tech, Wilkins spent five seasons on staff at Tulane working under former Vandy associate head coach Ed Conroy as well as Mike Dunleavy Sr. He served as director of basketball operations for one season before four seasons as an assistant coach for the Green Wave.

Wilkins began his collegiate coaching career as the director of player development at his alma mater – Kent State in 2012-13.

At the AAU level, he co-founded and served as associate head coach of Stackhouse Elite AAU travel team in Atlanta in 2011.”

A fast riser in the coaching community who seems to have gradually taken steps up at every stop along the way. He also has connections to Stackhouse and to other members of the Vanderbilt staff already, so this should be a nice fit for all parties involved.
