This is the second of the McElvain brothers to play for the Commodores in college. Chris McElvain also spent three seasons with the program from 2019 to 2022 where he made 44 appearances, 17 being starts, with an 11-6 record, posting an ERA of 4.33 with 165 strikeouts. The Cincinnati Reds later selected him in the eighth round of the 2022 MLB Draft. He spent one year playing in their farm system in Daytona and Dayton Dragons. Then, following a trade with the Toronto Bluejays, McElvain has spent the past two seasons playing for Vancouver and Dunedin.
Ethan McElvain is now the latest loss for the program to the transfer portal. OF Koby Kropf (Winthrop) as well as Matthew Polk, RJ Hamilton, and Jayden Davis have also entered in their names. That’s following the disappointing end to their season over this past weekend as the Commodores, the No. 1 overall seed in the 2025 NCAA Baseball Tournament, would lose the Nashville Regional.
