Houston (Texas) Westfield defensive lineman Anthony Holmes has decommitted from Virginia, he announced Thursday night.

Holmes is the No. 886 prospect in the 2022 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 102 defensive lineman and the No. 127 prospect in Texas.

His decision to back off the pledge to Virginia comes just hours after it was announced that Cavaliers’ head coach Bronco Mendenhall wouldn’t return as head coach in 2022.

“I want to begin by thanking God for blessing me with so many things in my life. Including the opportunity to play at the next level,” Holmes wrote. “I want to thank Coach Mendenhall, Coach Sintim, and the entire Virginia football staff for everything. However, after much consideration, talking to my parents and coaches, I have decided to withdraw my commitment from the University of Virginia and re-open my recruitment!”

Anthony Holmes is the first prospect to decommit from Virginia since the announcement on Mendenhall’s status. He chose the Cavaliers in June over offers from Indiana, Duke, Colorado, SMU, and others. Virginia’s recruiting class dropped one spot in the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings to No. 49 following his decommitment.
