Cavaliers center fielder Bobby Whalen was the one to call game after hitting into a fielder’s choice that Larry couldn’t handle. Coincidentally, Larry didn’t have a hit in the game despite the game-winner coming off his bat.
Virginia found themselves fighting out of an early deficit against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. After taking an early 2-0 lead, the Bulldogs responded with a three-run home run courtesy of Hunter Hines. The Bulldogs would tack on one more run to give themselves a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning before Virginia responded back, adding two runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4. Virginia had a chance to end the game with the opening hitter of the ninth inning, infielder Harrison Didawick.

Didawick nearly smashed one over the left-center field wall, but it was just short, resulting in the ball bouncing over the fence for a ground rule double. Still, no matter, as Virginia was able to pick up the win and is now just one win away from advancing to the Super regional round.
As for who Virginia will have to play in the Charlottesville regional finale, that remains to be seen. The Cavaliers will get the winner of Mississippi State’s rematch with St. John’s. The two programs faced off on Friday, with the red storm falling in extra innings courtesy of a walk-off home run by the Bulldogs Dakota Jordan. Whoever wins that matchup will be issued the tall task of defeating Virginia not once but twice to advance to the Super regional round.
With Virginia, one went away from punching their ticket to the next round of the NCAA championship tournament; look for the Cavaliers to continue to ride their high-powered offense regardless of who they play next.
