Anonymous opposing coach says Virginia Tech has 'no talent' on its roster
For 25 consecutive seasons, from 1993 to 2017, Virginia Tech football finished below .500 zero times. Well, they’ve now dipped below .500 in three of the past four seasons and are coming off their worst record in 30 years. Are things looking up? Only the performance on the field this fall well tell us that. However, one anonymous ACC coach is pretty adamant that the Hokies and second-year head coach Brent Pry are working with an empty war chest when it comes to the current talent on the team.
In an interview with Athlon Sports for their annual preseason college football magazine, this anonymous coach didn’t hold back when talking about the state of the program in Blacksburg. He said flat-out that there’s simply not much talent on the roster and points to the transition away from Frank Beamer as the reason VT still can’t get back to where they once were.
“Here’s the biggest problem they have,” said the coach. “There’s no talent on the roster because they had a coach that didn’t understand how fragile Frank Beamer’s system was.”
Wait, hasn’t Beamer been gone for most of the last decade? Yes, but apparently, this coach believes VT still hasn’t figured out a path to major success beyond him. Of course, that could also have to do with the departure of a guy like Bud Foster, who was by Beamer’s side as defensive coordinator for 20 years and kept going for another few before retiring ahead of the 2020 season — coincidentally, the start of the sub-.500 play for VT.

Either way, the situation isn’t great for Virginia Tech. This anonymous coach believes it’s a long road to hoe to get back to elite recruiting and high-level success on the field.
“Now to get the talent back from their own state, they’re going to have to show proof of concept, and they really can’t because the talent is so bad on the roster,” the coach added. “They’re trapped right now. It’s not a secret. They have a long way to go, and they need to pull some kind of upset or have a big moment to get a little attention.”
Shew, this anonymous coach sure is lucky he’s shrouded in mystery and doesn’t have his name plastered all over the Athlon Sports magazine. Because if Hokie fans or players knew this man’s identity, you’d have to think there’d be some real fire in their eyes the next time they faced his team.
