Virginia Tech‘s Week 7 matchup with Wake Forest is forecasted to be a wet and rainy day. And that means head coach Brent Pry has had his team preparing for the likely poor weather conditions they will face on Saturday. But who is getting the work in, and what are they doing to prepare for the wet weather conditions? According to Pry, his focus has been primarily on the offense.

“They already did wet ball work today. The receivers did. I would think the running backs and quarterbacks got theirs in. But we’ll do it all week just to make sure we’re ready for it,” said Pry

This year, Virginia Tech has found balance in their offense between their passing game and rushing attack. On the season, quarterbacks Kyron Drones and Grant Wells have combined for 1215 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions. And receiving-wise, Virginia Tech has five pass catchers with at least 10 receptions in triple-digit receiving yards this season.

The other half of the coin for the Virginia Tech offense is a rushing attack led by junior running back Bhayshul Tuten. Tuten has carried the ball 79 times for 330 yards and two rushing touchdowns. And not far behind him in productivity is Drones, who has 76 carries for 285 yards and four of the Hokies’ seven rushing touchdowns.

Poor weather conditions are, indeed, impacting how Virginia Tech prepares for this home matchup against Wake Forest. But it doesn’t have any impact on their desired outcome. The Hokies will look to walk away from Saturday’s contests with a victory and improve to 3-3 in 2023.

Pry confirms Kyron Drones will start, provides update on Grant Wells

Virginia Tech has been without starting quarterback Grant Wells since the second week of the season due to injury, but that could change this week if he’s able to get through some practices without issue.

Of course, for now, the starting job belongs to the man who replaced himKyron Drones.

“Kyron’s the guy right now,” Coach Pry said. “I think he’s playing pretty good. Not perfect, certainly, but giving us a chance. And Grant’s still kind of climbing out of this injury. He’s much closer.”

Drones has just a 1-3 record so far as the starter but has shown some positive signs in his playing time with Wells out. He hasn’t turned it over much, for one.

He’s also offered a jolt in the run game. But as a passer, Drones is a little bit more limited. He’s got a 55.4% completion percentage and has thrown for 721 yards and four touchdowns, against just one interception.
