Brent Pry addresses frustration within Virginia Tech program over 5-5 record
Virginia Tech‘s preseason win total was set at 8.5. With three weeks left in the regular season, they won’t be able to cross that mark in 2024.
With a 5-5 record and with two games left on the Hokies’ schedule, Virginia Tech still has a shot at making it to the postseason and winning as many as eight games this season. Head coach Brent Pry addressed the state of the Hokies’ football program heading into their bye week.
“The goal here at Virginia Tech is always going to be to get to the championship game,” Pry said after Tech’s loss to Clemson in Week 11. “We’ve clearly fallen short, but there are a lot of things that our group can be proud of. We talk about finishing and needing to be better there, we have a great opportunity to do that. We’ve got an open day to clean things up, to get healthy.
“Got two good opponents left. Let’s get to postseason play and let’s continue to try and be the team that we can be.”
Virginia Tech led Clemson 7-0 at halftime of the Week 11 ACC matchup. However, a 14-point third-quarter showcase from the Tigers saw Clemson relinquish the lead. They ultimately defeated the Hokies 24-14.

Now, Virginia Tech is off on its bye week and will look to regroup in Week 13 on the road against the Duke Blue Devils. With Duke sitting at 7-3, they’re also idle in Week 12 and will look to round out its regular season on a high note. With the game being played at Duke, it’s likely the Hokies will head into that one as road underdogs.
If they don’t take care of business against the Blue Devils, it will be up to the Commonwealth Clash in Week 14 against in-state rival Virginia to decide whether or not Tech becomes bowl-eligible.
Given that Virginia also has five wins this season — and has to play No. 8 Notre Dame and No. 14 SMU in back-to-back weeks before the matchup — there’s a real possibility that both UVA and VT will have five wins heading into the regular season finale.
