Brent Pry assesses the level of competition among quarterbacks
Virginia Tech has already had a handful of spring practices, and head coach Brent Pry has had an opportunity to gauge the competition going on at quarterback. But while he’s been watching it closely over their first five practices, it appears as if it is difficult for the Hokies headman to assess. Following practice on Tuesday, Pry gave his thoughts on the level of competition among quarterbacks and also explained the level of substance he has to make that assessment.
“Yeah, probably not where I’d like it to be yet,” said Pry. “But I think Grant’s throwing the ball really well. Kyron has done some things athletically that are very impressive. I think Pop has made some throws. He had a couple of drops today that should have been completions; where he put the ball where it needed to be. So, again, it’s just after five days there’s just not quite enough substance to say a whole lot about anything.”
It currently appears to be a three-man race for the starting quarterback spot next season at Virginia Tech. The competitors for that spot are freshman quarterback William “Pop” Watson III, redshirt senior Grant Wells, and redshirt sophomore Kyron Drones. So far, it appears that all have shown flashes, according to Pry, but no one has set themselves above the rest. But there is still time for someone to impress the Hokies head coach, as spring practice has only just begun, and Virginia Tech has a few more scrimmages to go.
Pry pleased with Virginia Tech’s progress through first scrimmage
Over the weekend, Virginia Tech held its first scrimmage of the spring. After the fact, Pry was asked to evaluate where his team currently stands. While he wants to see the team take it to another level, he also understands that they are in a good spot given what point of the schedule the Hokies are currently at.

“For day five, I have to remind myself it’s only the fifth practice,” Pry said. “I expect it to be cleaner, I expect it to look better, I expect a lot of things. But then I say wait a minute. This is only day five. Third day in full pads, first day in the stadium. So I was pleased.”
Virginia Tech hired Pry to lead the Hokies program prior to the 2022 season. He previously spent time at Penn State as the Nittany Lions’ defensive coordinator.
