Brent Pry explains hire of Philip Montgomery

Brent Pry was excited to bring in Philip Montgomery as Virginia Tech’s new offensive coordinator and is ready to see the impact on the unit.
Montgomery returns to college football after one year in the UFL. His last college job was the OC job at Auburn after Tulsa.
Based on his track record, Montgomery could really boost Pry’s offense.
“We had some good candidates, but he was the best,” Pry said of Montgomery. “He checked the most boxes for what we’re looking for to continue to move not just our offense but our program forward. He’s a veteran offensive coach. He has a proven track record developing quarterbacks, he’s a proven play caller, he’s had numerous really successful seasons, statistically and with wins as a play caller.”
While with the Golden Hurricane, Montgomery went 43-53 overall and went to four bowl games. In 2016, Tulsa was 10-3 and were winners of the Miami Beach Bowl.
“When you look at his time at Houston … (he had) some high powered offenses,” Pry said. “Obviously at Baylor with RGIII, a Heisman Trophy winner … multiple quarterbacks there, and a bunch of successful years and a bunch of wins. And then also his time at Tulsa. Offensively, they had a season that seems unbelievable. They had a quarterback with 3,000 yards, two receivers at 1,000, two running backs at 1,000. That’s some high production, but also his experience as a head coach, very valuable to me. I just think we’ve got a true veteran.”
Montgomery could definitely bring a boost to the Virginia Tech offense in 2025. Still, there’s around 200 days or so until kickoff of the 2025 season.

Pry shared some thoughts on what the Hokies’ schedule looks like for next season. Pry did so at a recent press conference last week.
As of now, though, he hasn’t given it too much of a thought yet with them still a few weeks out from spring practice in Blacksburg. Perhaps Montgomery will be in the fold shortly.
“Yeah, honestly, um, I haven’t dove into it a ton,” said Pry. “I mean, obviously, I know what it looks like.”
The first thing that Pry did note about the Virginia Tech’s schedule were the aspects of their conference slate in the ACC. Their league opponents next fall will be NC State, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, California, Louisville, Florida State, Miami, and Virginia.
