For the first time since 2016, Virginia Tech was able to add a bowl win to the resume. Head coach Brent Pry saw his team battle in the Military Bowl, facing off against Tulane in the pouring rain. A great 41-20 win now has the momentum moving in the right direction in Blacksburg.

During his postgame interview with ESPN, Pry expressed how proud he is of everyone involved with the program. Not just for Wednesday afternoon’s win but for the entire season. Virginia Tech has not finished above .500 since 2019 and is seemingly trending back in the right direction with a 7-6 record.

“So proud of so many people,” Pry said. “It’s going to take an entire offseason to tell everybody. These players, these coaches. The fans have been unbelievably loyal and supportive. Administration. We got a lot of things moving in the right direction at Virginia Tech.”

Pry was then asked what the Military Bowl win does for his program, saying it keeps the ball rolling. Not everything went perfectly throughout the year but Pry is still happy with the overall result.

“It adds to the momentum,” Pry said. “We’ve played really well at times over the course of this season. But the thing that is most important to me is how we continue to get better and better. We weren’t perfect today but very proud of the effort.”

As for the game against Tulane itself, Virginia Tech was able to win thanks to the great play of quarterback Kyron Drones. While he was efficient through the air — 13 completions for just 91 yards and two touchdowns — it’s with his feet where the money was made.

Drones finished with 176 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground, showing another sign of improvement for Pry.

“He’s a special talent,” Pry said. “His legs, his arm, his decision making. He’s only going to get better and better. That’s what he’s done since he got here.”

Next time we see Virginia Tech on the football field, they will be facing off against an SEC opponent. A trip to Nashville for a showdown vs. Vanderbilt will kick off the 2024 season under Pry.

Getting a bowl win can keep spirits high inside a program, especially when performing in front of your own fans. With Drones returning and hopefully getting better with a full offseason of work, Pry loves where his program currently stands.
