Brent Pry penalized for reaction to controversial no-call in Duke's Mayo Bowl
With 9:24 left in the second quarter of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the officials didn’t call pass interference on Minnesota on a pivotal third-and-5 Hokies passing play. Following the play, ESPN rules analyst Matt Austin weighed in on the controversial no-call.
“I only saw the play before once, but I thought there was a lot of contact there. This one, there was a little bit of body contact because the receiver slowed down, but the standard for defensive pass interference is an obvious intent to impede. I think they just bumped bodies. I don’t think there was enough to throw a flag on the play,” Austin said.
On the play, Virginia Tech quarterback Collin Schlee threw a go route to Chanz Wiggins up the sideline. However, when the ball fell a bit short, Wiggins was unable to circle back toward it because the Minnesota defender was in his way.
While Austin believes the contact was incidental, Brent Pry obviously felt that a flag should’ve been thrown on the play. In fairness, it was a crucial moment. With no penalty called, Virginia Tech had to punt the ball and Minnesota ultimately scored a touchdown on the next drive, securing a 14-7 lead.
