Virginia Tech is one of a handful of programs that might turn to the spring transfer window for quarterback help going into the 2024 season, but coach Brent Pry hasn’t completely made that determination just yet.

He still needs to go back through the film of the spring game and evaluate exactly where things stand coming out of spring football.

“Yeah, we’re having those discussions now,” Pry said Saturday. “And we’ve obviously got some guys in mind that we’ll speak with. We’ll see kind of where it goes. It’s got to be the right group.”

Kyron Drones is expected to be the starter, and he very much looked the part on Saturday. He finished 6-of-10 passing for 122 yards and two touchdowns, while he also rushed twice for eight yards.

The real question is what happens behind him.

William “Pop” Watson and Dylan Wittke, a pair of redshirt freshmen, are battling for the backup job. They reportedly had a pretty mixed spring, with Wittke leading the race early in spring ball and Watson taking charge later on in the spring.

But whether either will be ready enough to keep Virginia Tech out of the spring transfer window remains to be seen.

“You look at Dylan and Pop and you say, ‘Well, could one of them be ready by September?’ Well, maybe,” Pry said. “But do you want to take that risk? So that’s something watching this film, that’s why today was important for those guys.”

Statistically, Watson had the more productive spring game, though Wittke was on the team playing behind Drones, so he didn’t get quite as many opportunities.

Watson finished 13-of-21 passing for 130 yards in the game, though he also threw an interception. Wittke finished turnover free but went just 5-of-8 for 44 yards.

The spring transfer window opens on Tuesday and will remain open through April 30.

The good news for the Hokies is they’re not searching for a starter; Drones has that job locked up after finishing the 2023 season with 2,084 yards passing and 17 touchdowns against just three interceptions.
