Former Virginia Tech star announces return in offensive analyst role
Dyrell Roberts, who played wide receiver at Virginia Tech during his college career, is returning home to Blacksburg to join the Hokies’ coaching staff as an offensive analyst. He announced the news Sunday with an announcement graphic posted to his Twitter page.
“Well, I’m heading home to Virginia Tech,” Roberts wrote. “I’m incredibly blessed to be rejoining the program I once played for as an offensive analyst! … While the journey is nowhere near done, it has been a dream of mine since I graduated to come back to Blacksburg. I can’t wait to show the next generation of student-athletes what it means to be a Hokie!
“Let’s get work.”
Roberts, who played under legendary Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer from 2008-12, caught 96 passes for 1,363 yards and six touchdowns during his time as a Hokie player, while also graduating as Tech’s all-time leader in career kick return yardage (1,577) and kick return average (25.9).
Roberts jumped right into the coaching field following his playing days, as he joined the staff as his former high school in 2013 as the assistant head coach and co-offensive coordinator. Following his time at the high school level, Roberts moved up to the college ranks – joining the staff at Norfolk State and working with multiple position groups.
Prior to joining the staff at Virginia Tech, Roberts most recently served as the wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator at Western Illinois.

Former Virginia Tech quarterback officially added to San Diego State roster
It’s official. Braxton Burmeister is heading to San Diego State.
The Aztecs announced Tuesday they added Burmeister to their roster via the transfer portal. He spent the last two years at Virginia Tech after starting his college career at Oregon.
It’s a homecoming for Burmeister. He’s from La Jolla, California, and was the No. 41 recruit from the state from the Class of 2017, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
After transferring from Virginia Tech, Burmeister was the No. 40 quarterback in the transfer portal, according to the On3 Transfer Rankings. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
This past season for the Hokies, Burmeister completed 142 of 255 passes for 1,960 yards and 14 touchdowns. Virginia Tech went 6-7 overall and 4-4 in ACC play in 2021.
