Former Virginia Tech wide receiver Jarrett Boykin is moving on to a new coaching assignment. After spending last season with the Murray State Racers, Boykin is on his way to Texas A&M-Commerce as their next wide receivers coach, according to On3’s Matt Zenitz.

“Former Virginia Tech and NFL wide receiver Jarrett Boykin is set to be hired as the wide receivers coach at Texas A&M-Commerce, a source tells @On3sports. Worked at Murray State last season and produced an all-conference receiver,” wrote Zenitz via Twitter.

Boykin spent four seasons with the Hokies from 2008-11. During his time at Virginia Tech, he played in 54 games and recorded 184 catches for 2884 yards and 18 touchdowns. Boykins, after going undrafted in the 2012 draft, spent five years in the NFL and two in the CFL. Most of his NFL career was as a member of the Green Bay Packers. After singing with the Jacksonville Jaguars shortly after the draft, the former Hokies signed with the Packers, staying with them for three seasons. Boykins played in 39 games in Green Bay with 57 receptions on 101 targets for 731 yards and three touchdowns. Boykins also started in eight games for the Packers.

Boykin stepped into coaching in 2019 after ending his playing career following his two-year stint and the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders. His first stop was at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, with the 49ers, where he was a quality control coach. He followed up with two seasons at Wingate as their wide receiver coach before his lone season as Murray states wide receivers coach.

Greg McElroy says it’s time to be concerned at Virginia Tech

The Virginia Tech Hokies hired Brent Pry last offseason to turn things around with their football program in Blacksburg. The first-year head coach had a rough debut season with the Hokies, finishing with an abysmal 3-8 overall record.

Not surprisingly, ESPN’s Greg McElroy recently gave him an ‘F’ grade for his debut year on his “Always College Football” podcast. He was breaking down the different grades for different college football coaches across the country, and he made sure Virginia Tech fans know that it’s time to be concerned about the job their head man is doing in Blacksburg, Virginia.

“And finally, Brent Pry. He gets an F. And he went 3-8 this year. But, you look at what happened, it was kind of a rock bottom situation. I mean, three wins was the worst by Virginia Tech since 1992. Now they’re going heavy into the portal. They are heavy into the portal and they have plenty of ground to make up, obviously, in the ACC. But I’m a little bit concerned right now. A little bit concerned with what Brent Pry was able to do. A lot of people when he was hired kind of wondered. What’s it gonna look like? What does he want to be? What [is] the offense gonna look like,” McElroy said.

“Now, things were difficult under the previous staff. The transition was difficult. Either way, you gotta hope that Brent Pry–brings in the 39th recruiting class and 6th best in the ACC, hopefully they can continue to develop guys the way Virginia Tech has for years. And maybe here down the road, they’ll be able to get very competitive again on a perennial basis there in the years to come,” McElroy said.
