Gabe Williams injury update: Virginia Tech LB reveals father suffered medical emergency while son was being stretchered out
The Virginia Tech Hokies suffered a serious injury on Saturday against Clemson. Freshman linebacker Gabe Williams had to get loaded onto a stretcher and taken out of Lane Stadium in an ambulance, after he had his leg put in an air cast. The game was stopped for several minutes as trainers and medical staff tended to Williams. Not only was it a tough time for the freshman linebacker, but he offered up an update on his status on Wednesday evening.
Williams noted that he was discharged from the hospital on the night of his injury, but unfortunately, he had some tragic news to share about his father. His dad was at the game and suffered from a stroke and brain aneurysm after witnessing the injury. He is currently in a hospital in Roanoke, Virginia in stable condition and he is in a medically induced coma.
Below is the full statement that Williams released on his Twitter page.
“I know many of you have reached out to my family and I after the game on Saturday and first, we want to say thank you. Thank you for the genuine care of compassion during this difficult time. I was discharged the night of my injury and hope to be on the road to recovery soon. My dad was at my game and suffered from a stroke and brain aneurysm after witnessing my injury. He is currently in a hospital in Roanoke in stable condition and he is in a medically induced coma. While we may not be able to respond to every call & text, we feel the love & support from all of you during this time. We believe God will continue to work miracles and appreciate your thoughts, prayers, and privacy as we go through this as a family,” Williams wrote in his Twitter statement.
Coming out of high school, Williams was ranked as the No. 14 linebacker in America, according to On3. He was also tabbed as a Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention in 2022. Before exiting the game on Saturday evening, Williams finished with one tackle.

The Virginia Tech defense held pretty strong in the first half, as the Hokies led 7-0 at halftime. The Clemson offense managed to get things going in the second half and there wasn’t much the Hokies’ defense could do. The Tigers scored all 24 of their points in the second half, with their offense waking up when they needed it to happen. Clemson running back Phil Mafah had over 100 rushing yards. And the Tigers won, 24-14.
Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones was benched in the game in the fourth quarter. He struggled to get much of anything going. And the Hokies’ offense performed much better with Schlee in the game. But Drones was seen with a special sleeve on his right leg and in the second half, he had a brace on his right leg.
