The NFL isn’t the only sports league being impacted by the Taylor Swift effect. During a recent interview, Virginia Tech women’s basketball head coach Kenny Brooks revealed the music mega stars’ impact on his Hokies.

During this year’s Grammy Awards, on Sunday, February 4, Swift revealed that she would be dropping a surprise album this year. And that news was too much for one of Brooks’ star players, Liz Kitley, to handle and resulted in a hilarious moment for the Virginia Tech women’s basketball head coach.

“So last night, we were all exhausted, got back home, and I think Liz and I were exchanging text,” said Brooks during a recent interview with the ACC Network’s Taylor Tannebaum. “And she said, ‘I am just over the moon because Taylor has a new album coming out. And it’s a surprise album.’ And I’m like, Taylor? What is she talking about? And then quickly I’m like, Oh no, it’s gotta be something Taylor Swift. And so, just like a dad who’s really out of touch with a lot of things that your kids really like, that was one of those moments for me. I kind of went with it and celebrated it a little bit with her.”

You can check out all of what Brooks had to say on the topic in the video below.

Kitley leading the Hokies in another promising season

The energy from the Virginia Tech star Swifty must be reverberating as the Hokies are in the midst of another impressive season run. After finishing last year with a 31-5 record and 14-4 in the ACC, culminating in a 79-72 semifinal round loss to the eventual champions LSU, Virginia Tech has started this season going 18-4 and is 9-2 in the conference.

Kitley has stepped her game up from last year, improving in both points per game, from 18.2 to 22.1, and rebounds per game, from 10.7 to 11.5. And her running mate, guard Georgia Amoore, has been chipping in, leading the team in assists per game at 7.6 and is second in scoring behind Kitley with 17.7 points per game.

While the Taylor Swift album news for the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team might be exciting, the Hokies are in prime position to create some of their own magic this season with a possible ACC regular season and conference tournament championship, with a strong possibility to win it all. Following their thrilling 70-61 overtime victory on the road against top 25 ranked North Carolina, Virginia Tech has another challenging road contest against the No.5 ranked NC State Wolfpack.

Should Virginia Tech continue their winning ways, Kitley could end this year enjoying the new Taylor Swift album while leading the Hokies to a few titles and awards of their own.
