Kyron Drones injury update: Major news emerges on Virginia Tech QB during spring

Major news emerged on Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones Saturday. Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reported Drones will sit out the remainder of spring practice to undergo a minor medical procedure.
Head coach Brent Pry confirmed the news as well. The hope is Drones will return and be ready for summer workouts ahead of the 2025 season.
Drones was initially healthy going into spring practice. Pry even said his QB returned to form, but there appears to have been a minor setback.
“Kyron has demonstrated excellent leadership & has had an outstanding winter & spring,” Pry said. “We fully anticipate he will be ready to return for summer workouts.”
With health comes a new offensive coordinator for Drones. Virginia Tech hired Phillip Montgomery this offseason after he spent the 2024 season working in the UFL. Auburn was the last collegiate program to employ Montgomery, also serving as the OC in Hugh Freeze‘s first season in charge.

Virginia Tech is going to need Drones to not just be healthy but play at a higher level in order to have a successful 2025. Pry is anxious to see how Drones and Montgomery work together.
“I think it will be key for us, obviously, is for Kyron to play well and be more polished, be more balanced,” Pry said. “Throw the ball downfield a little bit better. So, I’m excited about that. I think Kyron has all the potential to do that. And I think Coach Montgomery has us in the right direction.”
Drones is entering his fifth season of college football after beginning his career at Baylor. The first two were spent in Waco but now enters his third with Virginia Tech and in his final year of eligibility, the time for him is now.
In nine games last season, Drones threw for 1,562 yards, 10 touchdowns, and six interceptions while completing 60.7% of his throws. Virginia Tech was not afraid to dial his number on the ground either, as Drone had 336 yards and six touchdowns on 98 rush attempts.
