WATCH: Miami misses free throws, crowd roars as it gets free bacon due to Smithfield promo
Go to a college basketball game, come home with free bacon. That’s the case for Virginia Tech basketball fans, who saw a promotional offer triggered by Miami choking at the free throw line.
The two teams were locked in a relatively close contest at the Cassell Coliseum on Tuesday night when the magic began.
Stepping to the line for a pair of free-throw attempts with his team leading 64-58, Miami’s Jordan Miller clanged the first off the back iron. The fans revved to a roar, knowing a second consecutive miss would qualify for the Smithfield free bacon giveaway.
You can watch yourself what happened next.
Unfortunately for Virginia Tech, the Hokies couldn’t come up with the win, likely leaving coach Mike Young even more exasperated at the lack of consistency his team has shown.

But, hey, the fans get some free bacon? Hard to be too upset about that.
Mike Young maddened by inconsistency of team defense, rebounding
The team’s inconsistent defense and rebounding has been a sore spot for Young, who has seen his team execute at an extremely high level against competent opponents at times and also come up way short.
“I don’t know. I don’t know,” Young said. “I just got to do a better job with them. We were awesome. There’s a correlation between playing great defense and rebounding and winning. And the same thing: You don’t guard, you don’t rebound you make it awfully hard on yourself.”
The loss to Miami will likely mean Young’s search continues.
“I can’t pinpoint it,” Young said. “I need to do a better job with them. … It’s been an interesting year. But I think we’ve got a lot more to look forward to, I really do.”
