The Virginia Tech Hokies were facing the old team of their head coach Mike Young on Sunday night. The Wofford Terriers are one of the many dangerous mid major teams in college basketball. The Hokies lead the Terriers 43-33 at halftime, thanks to some sweet outside shooting from Hunter Cattoor and some great inside play from Lynn Kidd. Both players poured in 12 points in the first half for Virginia Tech. Before he went into the locker room, Mike Young noted that he was pleased with his team’s performance in the first half vs. the Terriers.

“Pretty good half, Mack. Gotta take care of that three-point shot from them. They get it out of there quick. We’ve got a lot on our kid’s plates. They’re doing the best they can. But all in all a pretty good half of basketball I thought,” Young said.

Mike Young was likely pleased with the final result

Virginia Tech had four players score in double figures on Sunday and they really started to break things open in the second half. The Hokies outscored the Terriers 55-43 in the second half, cruising to a 98-76 blowout victory.

Virginia Tech took advantage of 15 Wofford turnovers, and they managed to turn some of them into points at the other end. Sean Pedulla, Lynn Kidd, Hunter Cattoor, and Tyler Nickel all scored in double figures for the Hokies. Lynn Kidd stuffed the stat sheet with 20 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

Virginia Tech torched the nets from beyond the arc, connecting on 10 of their 20 shots (50%). Since losing to South Carolina, the Hokies have now won two straight games.

When he was at Wofford, Mike Young originally recruited Hunter Cattoor there. But in switching schools, he was able to convince Cattoor to come to Blacksburg to join him at Virginia Tech and the rest has been history.

Cattoor connected on four of his seven three-point attempts on Sunday.

He’s been one of the most prolific shooters in ACC history with the Hokies. Cattoor is very close to shattering the school record for most three-pointers made in a career. That record was set by A.D. Vassallo (267).

While at Wofford, Mike Young spent from 2002-2019 there as the head coach, building their program into one of the more successful programs in college basketball. Young guided the Terriers to five NCAA Tournament appearances. In the 2018-2019 season, he led Wofford to a 30-5 overall record in the regular season, including a 18-0 record in the Southern Conference.

His success has translated to the Hokies in Blacksburg, where Young led Virginia Tech to their first ACC Tournament Championship in 2022. They whipped the Duke Blue Devils, 82-67, becoming the first seven seed in the tournament’s history to win it.
