It’s been a season of streaks for Mike Young and the Virginia Tech Hokies. After going 10-1 in non-conference games, the Hokies started 1-7 in ACC play, including losing seven games in a row.

The Hokies have bounced back since then, going 3-1 with wins over Duke and rival Virginia in their last four games. Now, Mike Young says that Virginia Tech has managed to return from the abyss.

“We’re trying to make it back from the abyss, David. That’s a step ahead,” Mike Young explained. “We’ve got a ways to go, but yes. The term was the abyss and we were there. Let’s hope that we can continue to move in a positive direction.”

Later, Young was asked what his team showed him, rising to the occasion and getting a marquee win that pulled them from the abyss.

“Let’s not use that word anymore. That’s a real word. I read that and I spilled my coffee. Pissed me off so bad, But, it’s true. It was accurate. I read, Dave,” Mike Young said.

“Just high-character people. No pouting. Just back to practice the next day. Yeah, we got Virginia coming in. Yes, in-state and all that stuff. We’ve got an opportunity to play another really, really good opponent. We’ve got a chance to play Virginia Tech basketball and fight and compete and adhere to the things that are important to us, and we did that by and large on both ends of the floor.”

Virginia Tech will look to keep going strong against Boston College on Wednesday night. This will be a grudge match, with an overtime loss to the Eagles being the game that started the Hokies’ seven-game losing streak.

Mike Young says that the clock is ticking to build a resume

Ahead of the win against Virginia, the Hokies dropped a game against a tough Miami Hurricanes team. It was after that loss to Miami, that Mike Young emphasized the clock is ticking for Virginia Tech to build its postseason resume.

“This one tonight isn’t fatal,” Young said.

“The clock is ticking for us. We got a big one at home on Saturday against Virginia. You know we’ve got nine more of these teeth gnashers. We got to get on a stick here. I do have a good bunch. We have been on a bit of a bumpy ride, but I like our team a lot. But we got to be tougher, better than that on the road.”
