ODU vs. Virginia Tech second half delayed, Hokies coaches stuck in elevator
In one of the wildest occurrences in college football history, the Virginia Tech coaches were stuck in the elevator before the start of the second half of Friday night’s game between Old Dominion and Virginia Tech. The delay lasted for 15 minutes before the second half officially began. The first half was wild enough, with a bad snap on a Virginia Tech field goal attempt leading to a scoop and score for the Monarchs.
Check out the referees talking it over with both head coaches before the start of the second half.
The Old Dominion Monarchs stunned the Virginia Tech Hokies in the first half of Friday night’s matchup. The Hokies lined up for a field goal late in the first quarter to try and stretch their lead to 10-3, but it was completely botched by the Hokies’ snapper and holder. The ball was loose in the open field and then a scrum ensued, sending the ball further down the field. From there, the Monarchs pounced on the football, and it was off to the races for six points.
The touchdown put Old Dominion up 10-7 with just less than two minutes remaining in the first half. Virginia Tech quarterback Grant Wells threw two interceptions in the first half and the Virginia Tech Hokies were officially on upset alert at that point. The Hokies then stormed back and took the lead 17-10 with 5:11 remaining in the third quarter. Currently, VT leads ODU 17-13 with 9:23 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The game is being televised on ESPNU.
Friday night’s game has been wild and sloppy for both teams. The Hokies and Monarchs both have five turnovers apiece with over a minute remaining in the third quarter. Virginia Tech running back Keshawn King rushed for over 100 yards on 15 carries before the finish of the third quarter.

The Hokies’ defense has been stingy thus far tonight, just allowing three points through the third quarter. Virginia Tech safety Chamarri Conner has played very tight coverage for most of the night. Hokies linebacker Dax Hollifield also laid a bone-crushing hit that forced a fumble.
Old Dominion pulled off a stunning upset against Virginia Tech
Four years ago in 2018, the Monarchs stunned 13th ranked Virginia Tech 49-35 in one of the biggest wins in ODU football history. In that one, Old Dominion receivers Travis Fulgham and Jonathan Duhart torched the Hokie secondary to the tune of 330 total receiving yards and four touchdowns.
