Report: Philip Montgomery primary target in Virginia Tech offensive coordinator search

Veteran offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery is the primary target of the Virginia Tech OC search, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
“Sources: Veteran Offensive Coordinator Philip Montgomery has emerged as the target of the Virginia Tech offensive coordinator search, and the sides are expected to come together on a deal soon,” Thamel wrote on Twitter. “He’s the former head coach at Tulsa who has coordinated at both Auburn and Baylor.”
Montgomery was last in action as a coach as the co-OC of the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL last season. Prior to that, he was Auburn’s offensive coordinator in 2023 after his stint as Tulsa’s head coach.
While with the Golden Hurricane, Montgomery went 43-53 overall and went to four bowl games. In 2016, Tulsa was 10-3 and were winners of the Miami Beach Bowl.
In 2020, Montgomery led Tulsa to the AAC Championship Game, but they fell short to Cincinnati and then lost the Armed Forces Bowl in the shortened season.
Philip Montgomery to Virginia Tech
Montgomery could definitely bring a boost to the Virginia Tech offense in 2025. Still, there’s around 200 days or so until kickoff of the 2025 season.
Brent Pry shared some thoughts on what the Hokies’ schedule looks like for next season. Pry did so at a recent press conference last week.

As of now, though, he hasn’t given it too much of a thought yet with them still a few weeks out from spring practice in Blacksburg. Perhaps Montgomery will be in the fold shortly.
“Yeah, honestly, um, I haven’t dove into it a ton,” said Pry. “I mean, obviously, I know what it looks like.”
The first thing that Pry did note about the Virginia Tech’s schedule were the aspects of their conference slate in the ACC. Their league opponents next fall will be NC State, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, California, Louisville, Florida State, Miami, and Virginia.
That includes road trips to Raleigh, Atlanta, Tallahassee, and Charlottesville. There is also one weekday date right now with their game against the Golden Bears being on either October 23rd (Thursday) or October 24th (Friday).
“You know, we’ve got to see where that game, that Cal game falls,” Pry said. “And, you know, we’ve got to do, you know, the away trips and make sure we plan the way we need to for those.”
