Sam Houston State Bearkats defensive back Isaiah Cash has committed to transfer to the Virginia Tech Hokies. The announcement came on his Twitter account on Thursday afternoon.

Cash played his high school football at Rouse in Texas. There, he was an unranked member of the Class of 2020. He initially attended Houston Christian University where he spent four seasons before transferring to Sam Houston State.

As a transfer player, Cash was a three-star recruit, according to the On3 Transfer Portal Rankings. He is the 53rd-ranked safety and the 586th-ranked player nationally in this transfer cycle. Cash made the announcement on social media, writing, “This is home,” along with a graphic for his commitment.

Now entering his sixth season of college football, Cash has plenty of experience. That experience showed up last season with Sam Houston State. From the safety position, he was able to make 67 total tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss and 0.5 sacks. On top of that, he also had two interceptions and 12 passes defended for the season.

The 2024 season was a great one for Sam Houston State, winning 10 games, including the New Orleans Bowl. That was in the second season for the program at the FBS level. It also proved to be the last season of the K.C. Keeler era at Sam Houston State.

Now, Cash is on his way to a Virginia Tech team that’s coming off a 6-6 regular season and still has to play in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The Hokies had a pass defense that ranked 61st in the country, giving up 214.3 yards per game. Then, the team’s scoring defense was ranked 44th in the country, giving up 22.8 points per game. As a unit, Virginia Tech forced 14 interceptions on the season.

The transfer portal opened on December 9th for players to enter following the regular season. It is one of two windows that the portal opens up from. The other transfer portal window opens following Spring practice. Another window would open if a head coach were to change jobs.

Virginia Tech currently has the 37th-ranked transfer class in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 2025 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings. It’s a class that has already seen 22 players exit the program through the portal while six transfers have committed to Colorado.
