Tony Robie and the No. 10 Virginia Tech wrestling team took down No. 7 NC State 21-10 to claim a share of the ACC wrestling crown.

It’s the seventh conference crown for the Hokies in the regular season since Robie took over the program in 2017. In front of a packed house in Blacksburg, Virginia Tech won the first four bouts and seven of 10 to take down the Wolfpack.

Following the match, Robie explained what this meant for the Hokies going into the individual postseason.

“I wish we weren’t sharing it, but as much as anything like, I’m just proud of the way our guys competed tonight,” Robie said postmatch. “And I thought we, you know, that’s a good team, a really good team, well coached, but our guys fought hard, like we had a lot of gritty wins. Like Raphael Hippolito bouncing back after a tough loss and really having to dig deep to win that match. And Mac Church, same thing … so proud of our effort.

“But, yeah … winning championships and getting trophies is always great, and winning ACC championships is always on the list of what we want to do, what we want to accomplish, what our goals are. So that part was good. It was fun, you know? And that’s, I think, that’s the best part of what we do as a program, as a coaching staff, for our athletes, for our fans, that kind of environment. I mean, it was rocking in here.”

NC State was still in the dual with two bouts left, trailing 15-10. But Virginia Tech pulled off two epic wins from Eddie Ventresca and Connor McGonagle at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively.
