Virginia Tech basketball guard Rodney Brown Jr. plans to enter NCAA Transfer Portal

Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball guard Rodney Brown Jr. plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, On3 has learned. He spent the 2024-25 season in Blacksburg, after beginning his collegiate career with the California Golden Bears.

Brown played in 18 games for Virginia Tech. He averaged 4.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists during his time with the Hokies. Now, he’ll be looking for his third program in as many seasons to play for.

A native of Temecula, California, Brown played high school basketball at Rancho Christian. He was a three-star prospect there and the No. 181 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also ranked as a Top-40 SG and a Top-30 player out of his state.

Virginia Tech finished this past season with a 13-19 record, and they were eliminated in the ACC Tournament by California. Wherever Rodney Brown Jr. ends up next season, he’s hoping to find more success than he’s experienced over his collegiate career thus far.

In other news, Virginia Tech head coach Mike Young is expected to return next season, according to The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman. Goodman reported Young will be able to work with an increased NIL package going into next season. It was seen as a need for the Hokies program.

Young’s been the head coach at Virginia Tech since the 2019-20 season and is 105-82 in nearly six seasons. He made the NCAA Tournament in 2021 and ’22, but lost in the first round.

During the 2022 campaign, Young led Virginia Tech to an ACC Tournament Championship. The last two years, the Hokies made it to the NIT, only getting to the second round last season.

The postseason was a non-factor for this campaign though. Young thought his team was turning the corner in January, but the Hokies couldn’t quite turn the corner.
