Virginia Tech backup quarterback Collin Schlee got the start for the Hokies on Saturday against Syracuse as Kyron Drones was unable to go.

Schlee played well in the first half, helping Virginia Tech to a 14-3 halftime lead. The former Kent State and UCLA quarterback was 10-for-15 passing for 144 yards before halftime. He also had a rushing touchdown.

Hokies head coach Brent Pry shared what he saw from Collin Schlee in the first half while speaking with the CW.

“Yea, I thought he’s played the game well. I thought he’s played fast. We’ve operated the offense,” Brent Pry said. “One throw he’d probably like back, but he’s done a nice job. He’s made some plays and he’s managed the game.”

According to Andy Bitter, Kyron Drones has his left foot in a walking boot on the sideline.

In addition to Kyron Drones, Virginia Tech is also without star running back Bhayshul Tuten.

He dressed for the game but did not play in the first half. Tuten has put up massive numbers for Virginia Tech, rushing for 951 yards and 12 touchdowns in eight games this season. He also has 18 receptions for 56 yards and two touchdowns. After his four-touchdown game against Boston College, Pry praised him, saying, “He’s a dog.”

Virginia Tech defense playing well

In addition to the play of Collin Schlee, Brent Pry is also happy with the way his defense is playing. The Hokies allowed only three points in the first half while forcing a pair of turnovers.

“Yea, I think it’s the takeaways,” Pry said of what’s been key for the defense. “Two really important takeaways on drives that Syracuse had.”

Virginia Tech outgained Syracuse 261 to 152 in the first half, picked off Orange quarterback Kyle McCord and also forced a fumble.
