Report: Virginia Tech QB Grant Wells, WR Jaylin Lane game time decisions vs. Rutgers
Virginia Tech is likely to be down a few players against Rutgers Saturday afternoon, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Starting quarterback Grant Wells and wide receiver Jaylin Lane are game time decisions against the Scarlet Knights. Brent Pry didn’t give too much this week regarding injuries, saying it would be evaluated day to day leading up to the game.
But it’s not looking good at the moment for Virginia Tech as the Hokies head to Piscataway.
“Sources: Virginia Tech starting quarterback Grant Wells (leg) and starting wide receiver Jaylin Lane (hamstring) will both be gametime decisions at Rutgers on Saturday,” Thamel wrote on Twitter. “Tech will be without top receiver Ali Jennings (ankle). Worth noting on Virginia Tech after they played a nine-hour game against Purdue last week.
“They didn’t get to the hotel in New Jersey until 10:30 p.m. last night after plane issues. Instead of leaving at 2 p.m., Tech left Roanoke at 8 p.m.”
Virginia Tech could get big bite from injury bug vs. Rutgers
On the flip side, Rutgers got bit by the injury bug as well.
“Sources: Rutgers will be without two starters against Virginia Tech today,” Thamel said. “Top receiver Chris Long is out with a lower body injury and will miss his second consecutive game. Right tackle Tyler Needham will miss the Virginia Tech game after a leg injury suffered against Temple.”
The number of players listed on the injury update could be troubling for Virginia Tech, which is looking to build on a shaky first season under Pry. A 24-17 loss to Purdue last week was understandable, especially given the circumstances.

“I think they’re all, I would say they’re all questionable,” Pry said. “It’s early in the week. We’ll evaluate those guys as the week goes. That’s Jaylin, that’s Grant, that’s Nasir (Peoples). (Keyshawn) Burgos had an elbow deal. Cole Beck.”
However, the Hokies won’t want to compound things by losing to the Scarlet Knights this weekend.
Still, there are a whole lot of people on the most recent injury update, including key guys like Jennings and Wells.
“We’ve got some guys that are dinged up,” Pry said. “They’ve been getting a ton of treatment and worked at it on Sunday and Monday. We’ll see how things go today and tomorrow.”
Virginia Tech and Rutgers are set to begin in Piscataway at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday with a broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
