Virginia Tech guard Brandon Rechsteiner enters NCAA Transfer Portal

Virginia Tech guard Brandon Rechsteiner has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. He spent two seasons with the Hokies.
Rechsteiner made 32 appearances for Virginia Tech this season and 15 starts. He averaged 7.0 points, 1.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 36.5% from the field and 29.9% from beyond the arc.
In his true freshman season, Rechsteiner played in 26 games and started twice. The 6-foot-1 guard averaged just 1.8 points in 9.1 minutes per game.
Rechsteiner had arguably his best performance this season in Virginia Tech’s season finale. In the Hokies’ 82-73 loss to California in double overtime, Rechsteiner tied his career-high of 19 points while shooting 6-14 from the floor.
Brandon Rechsteiner played high school basketball at Etowah (GA), where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 158 overall player and No. 22 point guard in the 2023 recruiting cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Rechsteiner averaged 18 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 2.8 steals per game as a senior to lead Etowah to the GHSA Class 6A Final Four. For his efforts, he was named the GACA/GBCA 6A North Player of the Year.
Now, Rechsteiner will look to reach new heights elsewhere. He is the second Virginia Tech player to enter the transfer portal this offseason. Sophomore guard Jaydon Young also entered the transfer portal for the Hokies.

Virginia Tech’s 2024-25 campaign was far from ideal. The team went 13-19 and 8-12 in conference play. It is the team’s lowest win total in a season during head coach Mike Young‘s tenure and their lowest as a program since the 2014-15 season.
Young hasn’t hesitated to make changes following the season. On Friday, Young announced the program was parting ways with assistant coach Christian Webster and recruiting coordinator Blake Wetherington.
“We are grateful for Christian and Blake’s dedication and hard work during their time in Blacksburg,” Young said. “Christian has been a valuable part of our program for nearly a decade, and Blake made an immediate impact in his time with us. Both have bright futures ahead, and we wish them nothing but the best.
“As we move forward, we are evaluating every aspect of our program to position Virginia Tech men’s basketball for long-term success. These changes reflect our commitment to that vision and present new opportunities for us to evolve with the current landscape of college athletics.”
