Virginia Tech football is in the midst of a program overhaul. Recent mediocrity in the ACC, a conference ripe for winning now, forced the Hokies’ brass to part ways with Justin Fuente as head coach.

Shortly after, Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry, who played at Virginia Tech and has produced top defenses since leading the Nittany Lions, was announced as the new front man in Blacksburg.

Pry has a ton on his plate as he continues to build a staff and hopefully acquire talent for his roster. On Tuesday, a surprising gift fell into the lap of the Virginia Tech coaching staff and their fans.

Johnny Jordan—a key member of the offensive line last season — announced on social media he would be returning for the 2022 season as he was granted an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA.

The 2021 campaign was Jordan’s first campaign in Blacksburg after transferring from Maryland.

The 6-foot 1-inch, 303-pounder appeared in all 11 games for the Hokies, making three starts at the center position. He split time between both center and guard during the fall.

Jordan’s return comes after offensive tackle Luke Tenuta, left guard Lecitus Smith and Brock Huffman all declared for the NFL Draft.

As it stands, Jordan would likely start at center for the Hokies in 2022 and the Tech offensive line would be rounded out by Silas Danzi, Kaden Moore, Parker Clements and players with little to no starting experience.

Virginia Tech lands two talented QBs in transfer portal

The significance of having a stout offensive line became even more important for Pry last week when the Hokies landed not one, but two talented quarterbacks with FBS starting experience.

The transfer portal can be a double-edged sword for college football teams. Sometimes the transfer portal can take away players from a team, sometimes teams can acquire prospects from the portal. On Thursday afternoon, the Virginia Tech Hokieslanded two quarterback prospects out of the transfer portal, Jason Brown (South Carolina) and Grant Wells (Marshall).

It had recently been reported that Wells was trending to the Hokies during the past few days and on Thursday, the former standout for the Marshall Thundering Herd made it official.
