Virginia Tech OL Gunner Givens enters NCAA transfer portal
Virginia Tech OL Gunner Givens has entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3 can confirm.
Givens is the third Hokies offensive lineman to enter the portal on Monday, joining Braelin Moore and Xavier Chaplin.
Givens is a former four-star recruit, according to the On3 Industry Rankings, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services. He was the No. 275 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class and No. 20 IOL.
He did not play during his true freshman season, utilizing his redshirt that season. In 2023, he played on the defensive line. He played in three games, making one tackle across that span. In 2024, he transitioned to the offensive line.
Virginia Tech boasted one of the most lethal rushing attacks in the ACC this season. In 2024, the Hokies’ offensive line helped push forward a rushing attack that compiled over 2,000 yards during the regular season.
The Hokies would go on to finish the regular season 6-6 overall after defeating in-state rival Virginia during the regular season finale. The beat the Cavaliers handily 37-17 and rushed for 202 yards and three touchdowns as a team during the contest.

Down in numbers across the offensive line, Virginia Tech is set to take on Minnesota in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl on Friday, Jan. 3. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and will air live on ESPN. The Gophers are early favorites in the matchup.
The portal officially opened on Monday, Dec. 9, 2024. More than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database during the 2023-24 school year. Removing those who withdrew or went pro, the final total sat at 2,707 transfers.
That means roughly 25 percent of all FBS scholarship players hit free agency in one year, per On3’s Pete Nakos.
