Kyron Drones reveals advice received from Virginia Tech greats Michael Vick, Tyrod Taylor
Virginia Tech has produced it’s fair share of elite quarterbacks throughout the program’s history, a standard that Kyron Drones will look to uphold as he enters his second season as the starter for the Hokies under center.
Thankfully Drones will not have to do it alone, as Virginia Tech’s offense returns a whopping 91% of their production on that side of the ball this upcoming season. But off the field, Drones also has a handful of former Hokies signal callers in his corner giving him guidance as well.
At ACC Media Days on Tuesday Drones opened up about his conversations with former Virginia Tech quarterbacks, starting with Michael Vick.
“He really just told me to go out there and be myself, I know what type of quarterback I am.” Drones said. “And then me just owning that and then just going out there and be myself, being able to work hard and going out there and try to lead the team to win every week.”
Vick was one of the most transcendent college and NFL quarterbacks of the century, named a First-Team All-American and helping lead the Hokies to a national championship game appearance as a redshirt freshman. Translating his game to the NFL in an unprecedented way as an iconic dual-threat quarterback who changed the game.

But Vick isn’t the only former Virginia Tech quarterback to achieve success in Blacksburg and at the NFL level.
“I’ve been talking to Mike Vick and then Tyrod Taylor a little bit here and there,” Drones revealed. “Me and Tyrod are supposed to get back on the phone and I just want to pick his brain with how he dealt with everything at Virginia Tech and how he deals with everything at the NFL. Just see what tools he can help me with coming into the season.”
After taking home the ACC Player of the Year Award in his senior season with the Hokies in 2010, Taylor was a sixth-round selection in the 2011 NFL Draft and has been a mainstay in the league ever since. Serving as a starter and a backup throughout his 13-year NFL career with 92 game appearances during his time in the league.
There’s no question that there’s a wealth of knowledge between Vick and Taylor that can be extremely useful for Drones moving forward in his career. Knowledge that Hokies’ fans are hoping can manifest itself into him becoming the next premier dual-threat quarterback to take Virginia Tech to championship heights.
