WATCH: Virginia Tech's Brent Pry has untimely interview during bowl game
New Virginia Tech head coach and former Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry joined the Pinstripe Bowl broadcast on ESPN at an untimely moment, leading to plenty laughs from the college football community. While his words were encouraging, the on-field product was not.
During the second quarter against Maryland, Virginia Tech trailed 7-3 with their defense on the field. Brent Pry answered a question about his DNA, telling ESPN abut his hope for a defensive identity.
“We’re gonna play a great brand of defense,” said Pry. “We’re going to be special on special teams and we’re gonna have a potent offense led by a dynamic quarterback. That’s the way (Virginia) Tech’s done it. And I think anyone that recognizes what an outstanding play it is…”
At that moment, Pry was interrupted by an unfortunate play. As he spoke about creating defensive identity, Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa snapped the ball. By the time he spoke about the special team and offense, a down-field pass had reached its target, and even Pry himself glanced sideways during his last words to watch Darryl Jones run into the endzone for a 70-yard touchdown.
The Maryland social media team noticed and posted the awkward moment, making fun of Brent Pry’s untimely answer.

Under the new 6-year deal, Hokies’ coach Brent Pry’s total pay is set to be $4 million in each of first two years, then rise to $4.75M for 2024 and ’25, and $5M for 2026 and ’27. Justin Fuente had been set for $4.25M this season, not including 10% pandemic reduction.
There is also a $5.5 million budget allotted for 10 full-time assistant coaches and $2.25 million for support staff written into Pry’s contract with Virginia Tech.
Pry, 51, replaces former Hokies coach Justin Fuente, who was let go Nov. 16 after his teams went 43-31 in six seasons.
Pry returns to Blacksburg, where he also served as defensive graduate assistant from 1995-97 under coach Frank Beamer and defensive coordinator Bud Foster.
Pry spent the past six seasons as Penn State’s defensive coordinator. He has also helped produce Top-25 units in total defense in eight of his past 12 seasons, including four at Penn State, three at Vanderbilt and one at Georgia Southern. The Nittany Lions rank seventh in scoring defense this season, allowing 16.8 points per game.
