Wake Forest has landed a commitment from Washington guard Mekhi Mason out of the NCAA transfer portal, On3 has learned. Mason spent one year with the Huskies.

Mason originally enrolled at Rice and spent two seasons with the Owls. Then he transferred to Washington ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.

He fared fairly well at the higher level, though his per game averages dipped a bit from his sophomore season to his junior season. Still, Mason was a very productive player.

Mekhi Mason averaged 9.9 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. He also chipped in 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals per contest.

He did that while appearing in 31 games for the Huskies. He started 20 of those games.

Perhaps the quality that sticks out the most about Mekhi Mason, and the one likely to generate him significant interest in the transfer portal, is his 3-point shooting. After posting strong freshman and sophomore seasons, Mason took things to another level as a junior at Washington.

He finished the season shooting at a 40.2% clip from downtown, a remarkably impressive figure. He did it on volume, too, making 53 of 132 attempts.

Coming out of high school, Mekhi Mason was rated by two of the four major recruiting services. He earned an 89 grade from both On3 and 247Sports.

Wake Forest adds a transfer forward

Mekhi Mason isn’t the only recent addition for Wake Forest out of the transfer portal. Valparaiso transfer power forward Cooper Schwieger has committed to Wake Forest, On3’s Joe Tipton reported. Schwieger played the past two seasons with the Crusaders and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-10 big man was named second team All-Missouri Valley Conference this past season after averaging 15.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. He was also named to the league’s Most-Improved team.

Those numbers were up from 13.2 points and 5.4 rebounds during his true freshman season in 2023-24. That was good enough to earn him the MVC Freshman of the Year award, becoming just the fourth player in school history to do so.

On3’s Chandler Vessels also contributed to this report.
