Michael Penix Jr. had earned the right to leave college for the NFL Draft if he so chose after the incredible he season he just had for Washington. He put up incredible numbers and led the Huskies to their most wins since 2018. However, he wanted to follow a different path as he announced earlier this week that he’d return to Seattle. Based on that choice, he gave a welcome surprise to his head coach Kalen DeBoer.

DeBoer recently shared his thoughts on Penix’s announcement and the program’s excitement for his decision. He said it was a decision that energized everybody and makes them ready to go for 2023.

“We’re pretty fired up about that,” said a smiling DeBoer. “He threw us for a little surprise on Sunday after our team banquet. (He) had a video prepared, made the announcement to our team and many parents that were there as well…We’re excited about the future.”

Penix Jr. led the nation in passing yards with 4,354. That’s over 2,700 more yards than his previous best with Indiana. He also posted career-highs in completions (330), attempts (500), and touchdowns (29), which also was 13th best in the nation. Penix Jr. rushed for a career-best four touchdowns too.

Penix Jr. was a Heisman candidate at different points throughout this season. That’s why DeBoer wants to emphasize what this decision means for Washington this year and much as it does next year. With an Alamo Bowl against Texas left on the schedule, DeBoer, Penix Jr., and the Huskies have their eyes set on their best record since 2016 before they run it back again next season.

“It’s certainly got our momentum going for next year. (But) we still got work to do this year,” said DeBoer. “We want to close out this season and try to get that 11th win.”
