As Washington looks for its next head coach to replace Kalen DeBoer, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb was thought to be a candidate. However, late Saturday night, Grubb announced he would be departing the program.

He penned a farewell to the Husky fans in a message on social media.

“Possible not probable,” Grubb said. “The vision coming to Seattle was clear. What wasn’t was how this family would come together and have the experience of a lifetime. Nothing will change that. This is all love. Though I wanted to be I will not be the next head coach at the University of Washington. It would have been a dream to stay here and fight to maintain the standard that has been re-established. I showed up every day early and stayed late gladly to fight for my family. And with tears in my eyes I know my last day in Husky Stadium has come. This program has blessed me with mentors like Jen Cohen and Chris Peterson. I leave blessed with their friendship.

“Seattle is the best!!! Husky fans are the best (even the ones that hate me sometimes… Always love). I know I was far from perfect but know I sacrificed all I could to bring our best every week. The passion and love this city has is rare. And I am so blessed to have been here. Thank you for all the support and belief you gave to me and my family. We will always love Seattle!!! To my players, I am sorry I could not finish the fight. I love you!!! Go Dawgs!!!”

Grubb spent the past two seasons in Seattle, working with DeBoer as the OC. He guided Washington to the College Football Playoff thanks to an explosive offense run by quarterback Michael Penix Jr. The Huskies finished with the No. 13 scoring offense during the 2023 season at 36 points per game.

Former Alabama head coach Nick Saban attempted to hire Grubb last offseason but he decided against it, returning to Washington. With DeBoer now in Tuscaloosa, there could be an opportunity for Grubb to finally call plays for the Crimson Tide.

DeBoer has a relationship with Grubb that goes further back than Washington, being together at Fresno State for two seasons and crossed paths at others points early in their careers. If a move down South is made, it would mark the fifth consecutive season the duo has worked together.

There have been no official staff members hired by DeBoer quite yet, with his introductory press conference taking place earlier on Saturday. With Grubb now being on the open market, you have to imagine DeBoer wants him at Alabama running the offense.
