Ryan Grubbs reveals Dylan Morris will stay with team during College Football Playoff run despite entering transfer portal
Despite entering the transfer portal this past week, Washington quarterback Dylan Morris isn’t quite on his way out the door yet. Huskies offensive coordinator Ryan Grubbs revealed that Morris will remain with the team throughout the College Football Playoff.
Grubbs added that while such a move is not typical, the team wants Morris to stick it out for the remainder of this season. He will serve as the backup quarterback to Michael Penix Jr. when Washington faces Texas in a CFP semifinal matchup on New Year’s Day.
Morris spent five seasons with the Huskies, recording 26 total appearances. He was even the starter in the 2021 season before losing the job to Penix, who transferred in from Indiana, in the 2022 offseason.
Morris started in 11 of Washington’s 12 contests that season, completing 60.6% of his pass attempts for 2,458 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also threw 12 interceptions as the Huskies finished out the year 4-8.
The previous season in 2020, Morris started all four games that he appeared in. He finished out the year with 897 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions as Washington went 3-1 in the contests he played in. He earned Pac-12 honorable mention as a result of his efforts.
Morris played high school football at Graham-Kapowsin (WA), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 183 overall recruit in the 2019 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Morris has seen action in only four games thus far in 2023 as the backup to Penix. He has completed 9-of-14 attempts for 224 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Washington is set to play Texas in the Sugar Bowl at 8:45 p.m. ET on Jan. 1. The winner will advance to play in the national championship. Once the Huskies’ season is up, Morris will be free to transfer and be immediately eligible to play for his new school in 2024.
