Portland (Ore.) West Linn four-star quarterback Sam Leavitt announced his decommitment from Washington State on Wednesday night. He was previously pledged to the Cougars since July 2.

Leavitt is the No. 493 overall prospect and No. 29 quarterback in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also a three-star recruit and the No. 2 player in Oregon.

On3 rates Leavitt higher than other recruiting services, according to the Industry Comparison. Per the 2023 On300, he is a four-star recruit, the No. 141 overall prospect, No. 10 quarterback and No. 1 player in Oregon.

“First and foremost I would like to thank coach Dickert and the Washington State staff for believing in me, and giving me an opportunity to play football at the next level,” Leavitt wrote in a statement published to social media. “It’s best for me at this time in my career to DECOMMIT from Washington State University. I have nothing but love and respect for coach Dickert, the staff, Washington State and it’s fans. Moving forward I hope nothing but the best for them.”

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound signal-caller took an official visit to Michigan State last weekend. According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, the Spartans have a commanding lead for his commitment at 98%.

RPM was released to the public in December. The On3 engineering group teamed up with Spiny.ai to create the industry’s first algorithm and machine learning-based product to predict where athletes will attend college.

It factors in machine learning, social sentiment, visits and historical trends. However, expert predictions are still a big piece of the RPM equation.

This decision from Leavitt comes after Washington State offensive coordinator Eric Morris was hired as North Texas‘ next head coach. The four-star also holds an offer from Washington, whose sole 2023 quarterback commit — Pierre (S.D.) T.F. Riggs four-star Lincoln Kienholz — flipped to Ohio State on Dec. 14.

Leavitt has an On3 NIL Valuation of $18.3K. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.

Sam Leavitt On3 Scouting Summary

The following is the On3 Scouting Summary for Sam Leavitt:

“Pure passer who looks like one of the top arm talents and playmakers in the deep 2023 quarterback cycle. Has a stout frame, measuring at 6-foot-2, 197 pounds with a 9.5-inch hand prior to his senior season. Also registers as a good athlete, running a 4.67 second 40-yard dash and 4.38 second short shuttle. A senior riser who turned in a fantastic final season after transferring high schools. Led his team to a state title, while completing 69.1 percent of his passes for over 3,000 yards (a stellar 12.6 yards per attempt) and 36 touchdowns against five interceptions. Pairs that accurate, efficient statistical profile with considerable arm talent. Makes eye-popping throws with regularity, including some of the best individual plays we’ve seen from a 2023 signal caller.

“Has outstanding natural passing mechanics with quick, fluid arm action. Generates considerable velocity on his throws to all levels. Can drive and layer the football from off-platform. Plays with natural field vision and throws receivers open. Looks to be a loose, coordinated athlete. Shows some playmaking ability with his feet, rushing for 713 yards and eight touchdowns, including a big game on the ground in the state championship game. Fares well against the pass rush and shows creativity both as a passer and runner. Has some football bloodlines as his father was a linebacker at BYU and his older brother, Dallin Leavitt, is a safety with the Green Bay Packers.”
