West Virginia was down 72-70 to Oklahoma with just 27 seconds remaining when the Mountaineers called a timeout with the ball in their hands.

A play was drawn up in the huddle for Erik Stevenson but it did not go according to plan. Stevenson took a bad shot and the Sooners won the game 77-76. After the game, Bob Huggins called out the fifth-year transfer guard.

“He ran himself out of the shot,” Huggins said. “Erik’s got so much confidence at times that he thinks he can do things. I’m not sure LeBron would have made that one. It was set up for him to come off and two guys to close the gate or as they would say in Hoosiers the old picket fence No, that’s not the shot. I don’t know if that’s a shot he wanted to shoot. But it definitely wasn’t a shot that everybody else wanted him to shoot. I mean it the whole deal was if you don’t have a shot, turn it, drive it hard, pitch it, which is what we did at the end and Seth made the shot.”

Seth Wilson hit a 3-pointer at the end of the game to cut the deficit to 77-76 but it was too little, too late.

Bob Huggins says Erik Stevenson has not been his usual self

Stevenson finished the game with nine points on 3-of-8 shooting with three assists. He played only 20 minutes while dealing foul trouble. Stevenson had four fouls.

It has been a tough stretch lately for Stevenson, who transferred from South Carolina. He apologized about 10 days ago for picking up technical fouls in two straight games. He has also fouled out in three of five Big 12 games to start conference play.

“I don’t have any idea other than the fact that Erik has not been well,” Bob Huggins said. “Eric has spent a couple of days in the hospital. That’s not the usual Erik. He’s been sick. There’s a lot of stuff going around.”
