West Virginia had a really tough start to the calendar year but Bob Huggins’ squad has picked up the pace with three wins in its last four games, including most recently against No. 15 Auburn.

Defeating the Tigers as part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge was a big boost for the Mountaineers, and Huggins said he was glad about the outcome.

“We won,” Huggins said. “That’s the most pleasing thing to me. I thought we had decent control of what was going on and then they came back and they made some shots. They made some hard shots and then we made some blunders that kind of led to them getting back in the game. I was proud of our guys that we hung in there. We could have dropped our heads and hung our heads and not competed. I think the way we competed down the stretch, we found ways and that’s what it’s about.”

Erik Stephenson led the way with a game-high 31 points on 10-for-17 shooting, including 7 of 10 from beyond the arc. Jimmy Bell Jr. also added 15 points.

Bob Huggins happy with win over Auburn

West Virginia lost a lot of games earlier in the month in some devastating fashion but they have seen to turned it around.

Their execution in the Auburn game is something for Huggins to be excited about going forward.

“When you’re playing really good people, you got to find ways to win,” Huggins said. “It’s very rarely ever all the same way. Whether it’s a steal, whether it’s a key rebound, whether it’s going to line and making free throws, it’s a lot of different things. As I think everybody knows, we’ve struggled making free throws down the stretch. That’s something that we’ve got to get a whole lot better at.”
