Former Florida QB Max Brown, who transferred to Charlotte last offseason, has committed to West Virginia, he revealed on X.

Brown threw for 561 yards and three touchdowns during the 2024 season. Through two seasons playing college football, he’s compiled 753 passing yards, three touchdowns and seven interceptions. He played in six games for the Gators during the 2023 season, but spent two years in Gainesville overall.

After redshirting as a freshman in Gainesville, Brown threw for 192 yards and an interception. That included an important start for Florida, which was his lone opportunity to do so, in place of Graham Mertz against Florida State. In that 24-15 loss to the Seminoles, he went 9 for 16 for 86 yards and the pick. Brown then elected to enter the portal at the opening of the window.

After transferring to Charlotte, Brown played heavily during the early portion of the season. He saw significant playing time against James Madison, North Carolina and a ranked Navy team. Afrer five appearances, he did not appear for the 49ers after Halloween.

Brown entered the portal on Nov. 28, two days before the 49ers final game of the regular season. His decision came shortly after the firing of former Charlotte head coach Biff Poggi. The 49ers finished the season with a 5-7 record.

Now, he’ll join a West Virginia squad that finished the 2024 season with a 6-7 record and is coming off an appearance in the Frisco Bowl. Brown will look compete for the starting job this offseason following the departure of fifth-year senior and two-year starter Garrett Greene.

The portal officially opened on Monday, Dec. 9, 2024. More than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database during the 2023-24 school year. Removing those who withdrew or went pro, the final total sat at 2,707 transfers. That means roughly 25 percent of all FBS scholarship players hit free agency in one year, per On3’s Pete Nakos. It remains to be seen how those numbers stack up during the 2024-25 school year.
