Former Princeton offensive lineman William Reed committed to West Virginia out of the NCAA transfer portal, according to his post on Twitter.

“Take Me Home!! Extremely grateful for this opportunity!! Thank you to Princeton and all the friends, family, teammates and coaches who keep me going,” Reed wrote on Twitter.

As a member of the Class of 2021, Reed was not ranked, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He played his high school football at Eastside Catholic out of Sammamish (Wash.).

Reed has one year of eligibility remaining.

“Coach Bicknell and Coach Dressler were awesome,” Reed told West Virginia On SI. “Coach Bicknell’s experience in the NFL is really impressive, not to mention his college experience. The facilities were some of the best I have seen on any visit. Probably the best. It seems like they are bringing in a lot of talent and want to turn things around quickly.”

Reed could be protecting Max Brown, a former Florida and Charlotte QB who transferred to West Virginia this month.

Brown threw for 561 yards and three touchdowns during the 2024 season. Through two seasons playing college football, he’s compiled 753 passing yards, three touchdowns and seven interceptions. He played in six games for the Gators during the 2023 season, but spent two years in Gainesville overall.

After transferring to Charlotte, Brown played heavily during the early portion of the season. He saw significant playing time against James MadisonNorth Carolina and a ranked Navy team. Afrer five appearances, he did not appear for the 49ers after Halloween.

The portal officially opened on Monday, Dec. 9, 2024. More than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database during the 2023-24 school year. Removing those who withdrew or went pro, the final total sat at 2,707 transfers. That means roughly 25 percent of all FBS scholarship players hit free agency in one year, per On3’s Pete Nakos. It remains to be seen how those numbers stack up during the 2024-25 school year.
