After an upper-body injury last weekend, Garrett Greene has a status that’s undetermined ahead of the next game in Tucson.

Among the updates that Neal Brown had on Monday, Greene is unknown as of now going into West Virginia playing at Arizona on Saturday. He did not practice yesterday as the Mountaineers will determine whether he can play or not over the course of the next few days.

“Yeah, we’ll see. We’ll see how it goes,” said Brown. “You know, I think it’s too early to tell any of that. He didn’t practice today.”

“I’m not saying he’s out. I think it’s too early to tell so we’ll just kind of play it by ear,” Brown said.

Greene did not return after halftime in the 45-18 loss to Kansas State this weekend. Before his exit, he was 9/19 (47.4%) for 85 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions, one of which was a pick-six. He did rush for 89 yards, though, at 8.1 per carry.

This comes during a poorer season to this point for the Mountaineers’ quarterback. Over seven games, Greene has completed 56.3% of his throws for 1,352 yards, nine touchdowns, and eight interceptions. The picks are already a career-high as he has two picks in four of the outings. That alone prior to the injury had begun a quarterback conversation for WVU.

However, if he were to be absent, West Virginia may not feel that much better based on the play of Nicco Marchiol, even with a week of preparation to potentially play as their starter.

“Yeah, he didn’t play well. Didn’t play well,” said Brown on Marchiol’s performance against the Wildcats. “You know, I don’t think it’s a fair assessment of where he’s at. You know, Oklahoma State? He played really well. He also had a great week of preparation that week, he practiced well and I wasn’t surprised. You know, last week? Missed practice on Tuesday and then wasn’t real sharp so didn’t practice real well. That’s kind of how he played.”

“He’s going to get a bunch of reps so, if his number is called, he’ll be ready and I expect him to play at a high level,” Brown said.

For now, Greene is questionable going into West Virginia’s matchup with the Wildcats. From here, it’s about settling on his status in time for that kickoff and what that means for both Greene as well as Marchiol.

“Know later in the week,” said Brown.
