Garrett Greene injury update: WVU QB's status revealed vs. Arizona
ESPN insider Pete Thamel provided an injury update on West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene Saturday morning on Twitter.
Thamel has revealed that Greene is unlikely to play when the Mountaineers face off against Arizona on Saturday night.
Greene suffered an upper-body injury last Saturday against Kansas State in a 45-18 loss to the Wildcats. Thamel also shared that left tackle Wyatt Milum is unlikely to play against Arizona.
“West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene and left tackle Wyatt Milum are both considered “doubtful” for the game at Arizona on Saturday night,” Thamel posted. “Nicco Marchiol is expected to get his second career start at quarterback.”
West Virginia head coach Neal Brown provided an update on Garrett Greene earlier this week, although he did not share whether or not he would be able to suit up.
““Yeah, we’ll see. We’ll see how it goes,” said Brown. “You know, I think it’s too early to tell any of that. He didn’t practice today.
“I’m not saying he’s out. I think it’s too early to tell so we’ll just kind of play it by ear.”
Greene did not return after halftime in the 45-18 loss to Kansas State this past weekend. Before his exit, he was 9/19 (47.4%) for 85 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions, one of which was a pick-six. He did rush for 89 yards, though, at 8.1 per carry.

This comes during a poorer season to this point for the Mountaineers’ quarterback. Over seven games, Greene has completed 56.3% of his throws for 1,352 yards, nine touchdowns and eight interceptions. The picks are already a career-high as he has two picks in four of the outings. That alone prior to the injury had begun a quarterback conversation for WVU.
Nicco Marchiol was 6-13 for 85 yards against Kansas State and Brown wasn’t thrilled with his performance.
“Yeah, he didn’t play well. Didn’t play well,” said Brown on Marchiol’s performance against the Wildcats. “You know, I don’t think it’s a fair assessment of where he’s at. You know, Oklahoma State? He played really well. He also had a great week of preparation that week, he practiced well and I wasn’t surprised. You know, last week? Missed practice on Tuesday and then wasn’t real sharp so didn’t practice real well. That’s kind of how he played.
“He’s going to get a bunch of reps so, if his number is called, he’ll be ready and I expect him to play at a high level.”
