Neal Brown addresses whether this game vs. Texas has added meaning with Longhorns headed to SEC
A number of Big 12 rivalries are about to go down the drain in the coming years as Texas and Oklahoma prepare for a migration to the SEC. So Saturday night could mark the final Big 12 matchup for West Virginia and Texas if the Longhorns wind up expediting their realignment move. For Mountaineer head coach Neal Brown, is the last clash with the boys in burnt orange a bittersweet moment?
Brown was actually asked nearly that exact question at one of his press conferences this week ahead of the game. “If this is the last time West Virginia plays Texas, does that, you know, on a personal level, does that bring anything?” Brown was asked. His initial answer was rather blunt and unemotional:
“Not really, not really. I mean, honestly, it’s a conference game, you know. I think it’s been pretty good games while both of us have been in the Big 12,” Brown responded. However, he did go on to credit the city of Austin for being a fun place to visit especially for fans. Even if the WVU head coach hasn’t been able to enjoy what the city has to offer during his “business” trips there over the years.

“You know, I think our fans like going down to Austin. It’s a cool venue to play at. I’m kind of like whatever. You know, if I was going to go to Austin, go to Sixth Street and watch some live music. But I’m gonna be probably staying up around rock. And I haven’t even looked at the hotel we’re staying at. But it’s not like I’m gonna be down there, nah. I’m kind of indifferent toward it really. And that’s not a knock on them. Just, it kind of is what it is. They lay out the schedule and we go play them.”

Frankly, West Virginia and Texas aren’t massive rivals. The Mountaineers have only been in the Big 12 for 11 seasons compared to Texas’ 27. So there really was never enough time to build an illustrious rivalry between the two programs. Which makes Brown’s response logical.
There you have it. Neal Brown simply not concerned with extenuating realignment circumstances regarding his team’s matchup vs. Texas.
