Neal Brown shares updates on Aubrey Burks, Trey Latham after injuries against TCU
West Virginia left Fort Worth with a 4-1 record and a win over reigning national runner-up TCU, but sustained some tough injuries along the way.
The scariest moment of the night involved WVU safety Aubrey Burks, who left the game on a stretcher after suffering a neck injury on a punt. He was taken to then hospital afterwards but luckily avoided anything major. After the game, head coach Neal Brown commented that he would be okay.
“We hope and we pray that he’s going to be fine. He was alert, he had movement in all areas,” said Brown.
He’s thrilled for the win, but hates to see Burks go down on a play like that.
“As excited as I am for our team, man, I really hurt for Aubrey Burks. You know, it’s a scary deal, and like I said, we’re getting good reports on him. He’s going to stay here tonight as a precaution.”
So Burks stayed the night in Fort Worth and will hopefully be on his way back to Morgantown in the near future. Meanwhile, Brown had some other injury updates to share, starting with linebacker Trey Lathan, who was carted off the field with what looked like a bad leg injury.
“And then Trey Lathan, who was just coming into his own and playing great, he gets hurt. He’s gonna have to stay and probably have surgery here,” said Brown. Last night, the team Twitter account confirmed that Lathan would stay for surgery.

The defense wasn’t the only side of the ball that suffered some losses, as Neal Brown was sick to himself over the injuries to his offensive line.
“And then we lose our whole left side of the O-line. You know, Wyatt Milum, who’s arguably one of our best players. Like, he’s played at an elite level — he gets hurt. And then Thomas Rimac gets hurt on a field goal, on an extra point.”
Those players were the starting left guard and left tackle last night, but both got hurt. Somehow, WVU still escaped with the win, but they’ll be far from 100% the next time they take the field, which is tough to swallow.
“So, you know, as excited as I am, I just feel for those for those guys and I think our team feels the same way,” added Brown.
