Pat McAfee had quite the experience at West Virginia’s spring game over the weekend. He led the Gold Team to a victory over the Blue Team, coached by WVU legend Pat White.

After the game, McAfee received a gatorade bath, or well, it was water from a Gatorade jug. Heck, the former Mountaineers’ punter and sports media sensation needed ice water at that point!

He was out frolicing around his alma mater the night before, making sure fans rooted for his team. Or something like that.

“Way to go gold team,” McAfee said on his show Monday. “Everybody knew what was happening in the first half of that game. But those refs and Pat White, who built the place and everything, it was taking place. I think it was like six to maybe 14 calls against my team but zero calls for my team in the first half. How the hell does that happen?

“And I don’t know the plays or most of the kids’ names. And I was only there for about an hour before the whole thing started. So all I can really do as a coach for my team is (expletive) at these refs and I certainly did from literally play one, all the way through that entire thing.”

Typical McAfee. You gotta love it and respect it though. Whatever he did, it led to his team winning.

“I was letting them have it, couple of American Conference refs, one Big 12 official was the white cap, they called a good game,” McAfee said. “Certainly the second half was a lot better than the first half. We got a couple calls in the second half. But I learned about a couple of the dudes here a little bit more in depth. It was great to learn about them, their story. These dudes are awesome.”

Morgantown is certainly known for its partying and social scene, McAfee knows that all too well and certainly took advantage.

“They got me very clean and I needed that,” McAfee said of the ice water dumped on him following the game. “I needed that with how hungover I was. I needed that. As the head coach of the gold team, I wanted to make sure that when students came to, I think there were over 10,000 people there or something like that … I wanted to make sure that students that came to the game were fans of our team. So I was out politicking the night before.”
