Pat McAfee reacts to West Virginia's upset win over Gonzaga in Battle 4 Atlantis
It didn’t take long for Darian DeVries to pick up a signature win at West Virginia. He did so Wednesday as the Mountaineers knocked off Gonzaga in overtime at the Battle 4 Atlantis, and WVU legend Pat McAfee reacted accordingly.
Gonzaga had the lead at halftime, but West Virginia rallied in the second half and got some big plays from Tucker DeVries down the stretch. He also made two crucial free throws in the final seconds, and since the Bulldogs called timeout before the second one, couldn’t sub Ryan Nembhard back in for the final sequence. They didn’t get a shot off, and the game went to overtime.
The Mountaineers then kept the momentum going, outscoring Gonzaga 15-6 in the extra period to seal the upset over the No. 3-ranked team in the country. McAfee and the rest of the WVU faithful had plenty to celebrate.
Javon Small had the biggest day for West Virginia with a team-high 31 points while adding seven rebounds. He led a strong attack from the Mountaineers offense, which shot 41.3% from the field and 31.4% from three-point territory. They also made three of their five shots in overtime to seal the victory.

Amani Hansberry also had a big day for the Mountaineers with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Tucker DeVries added 16 points. That includes the two key free throws with five seconds left in regulation to eventually tie the game back up.
West Virginia put together a strong second-half performance to force overtime, making 14 of 28 shots while holding Gonzaga to an 11-for-24 showing after the break. Small led the charge, scoring 18 of his 31 points in the second half before putting up five more in overtime.
It’s yet another major upset in college basketball in the early part of the season. Indiana also suffered a blowout loss to Louisville on Wednesday, and UConn suffered back-to-back losses for the first time in two seasons after falling to Memphis and Colorado in the Maui Invitational.
