Report: West Virginia to bench JT Daniels in favor of Garrett Greene
A new name will start at quarterback for West Virginia football as they take on No. 19 Kansas State today. Garrett Greene, who replaced starter JT Daniels and wound up leading a win over Oklahoma, has earned the starting job and will replace Daniels as the man under center when the Mountaineer offense first takes the field.
That news comes from ESPN insider Pete Thamel, who tweeted this report Saturday morning regarding the West Virginia QB position:
“Sources: West Virginia will make a change at starting quarterback today, with redshirt sophomore Garrett Greene making his first career start. Greene sparked WVU off the bench in an upset of Oklahoma last week and will replace JT Daniels as WVU starter.”
Greene in, Daniels out following a crazy game last week where both quarterbacks played significantly, with Greene ultimately finishing the game and earning the win. However the first three quarters featured quite a bit of whiplash at the QB position.

Daniels completed just 3/7 passes for 25 yards and tossed a poor fourth-down interception right to a Sooner defender before he was benched last week. Then, on his first drive, Greene came in and immediately led a decent drive down the field which included a few first downs before an eventual punt that flipped the field. He completed his first pass for 26 yards (one more than Daniels’ total) while flashing much more running ability as well with four carries for 22 yards on the first drive.

BUT, Daniels came back onto the field the very next possession, with the Mountaineers still having a big goose egg on the scoreboard and trailing 3-0 to Oklahoma. After another failed Daniels drive, Neal Brown tossed Greene back in and the offense took off from there.
Greene helped WVU put up 23 points and flashed as a dual threat weapon. He passed for 138 yards and a touchdown (in roughly half a game, mind you) while running for 119 yards and a pair of scores. Heck of a performance to pull out a gutry win vs. the Sooners. Enough to earn Greene the starting job. Today, he’ll officially get his first start.
