Not much has gone right for West Virginia early this season but there has been a nice surprise on the offensive end. True freshman CJ Donaldson was originally recruited as a tight end but switched over to running back when arriving on campus. Since then, he’s been amazing for the Mountaineers.

However, a scary moment took place during Saturday’s matchup against Texas. After a simple run to the right side, Donaldson went down to the ground and stayed still. West Virginia’s medical staff immediately rushed over to him to treat a head injury.

The stretcher was brought onto the field as both West Virginia and Texas players prayed on the field. A scary moment for the freshman and everybody involved.

“He was completely knocked out, we were told,” Fox’s Tim Brando said during the broadcast.

As Donaldson was being brought onto the cart and taken out of Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, the entire West Virginia team gathered around. Texas’ squad was not much further back, looking over the running back.

More on CJ Donaldson

In the four games prior to Saturday night, Donaldson was averaging 7.3 yards per carry. In total, the freshman had 380 yards and six touchdowns on 52 carries. Donaldson was leading West Virginia in rushing and was truly one of the best freshmen in the country.

The On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting services, Donaldson was ranked a three-star prospect. He comes out of the Miami area, being the No. 115 player in the state of Florida. Again, he was originally considered a tight end.

News has come out during postgame, saying Donaldson can move his extremities. A positive development for the West Virginia running back.
